Canyoning in France: Guided Descents, 17 Bases

Guided canyoning since 1994

Where to go canyoning in France

From the limestone gorges of the Northern Alps to the volcanic canyons of Auvergne and the warm pools of the Pays basque, France holds several hundred routes that can be descended safely with a professional guide. Takamaka has been running canyoning trips since 1994, with state-certified guides and local teams based in each massif.

Jumps, natural rock slides, waterfall abseils and swims through pools: canyoning starts from age 8 to 10 depending on the route, needs no previous experience, and goes all the way up to committing full-day descents. Wetsuit, helmet, harness and dry barrel are provided — bring swimwear and trainers you don't mind soaking.

Choosing your route

Three canyons for three kinds of day

  • Discovery

    First time, with the family

Short routes, optional jumps, little abseiling. Open from age 8 to 10 depending on the canyon, with no particular fitness required. Allow half a day including the approach walk.

  • Sporty

    Jumps, slides and swimming

The most popular format with groups of friends and stag or hen parties: a run of jumps, natural slides and swim-throughs. You need to be a confident swimmer and comfortable in water.

  • Vertical

    Big waterfalls and abseils

Committing descents, abseils of several dozen metres, a full day out. For people who have already done some canyoning or are in good physical shape, in small groups.

When to come

The canyoning season in France

The season runs from May to September, when flow rates and water temperature are at their best. High summer is the easiest time to enjoy the swims and jumps in full.

The shoulder seasons — late May, early June and above all September — offer wilder conditions, near-empty canyons and water that is still pleasant. It is the period regulars prefer, and the easiest one to book. In some destinations, winter canyoning in a dry suit extends the season into spring.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ — canyoning in France

Where should beginners go canyoning in France?

The Northern Alps — Annecy, the Bauges, the Aravis — hold the widest choice of beginner routes, with short canyons where every jump is optional. Auvergne and the Pays basque also offer very accessible descents, often far quieter in high summer.

Do I need to be able to swim?

Yes, a basic level of confidence in water is required: several sections are crossed by swimming, even on discovery routes. The wetsuit provides good buoyancy and the guide adapts the route to the group.

What is the minimum age?

From 8 to 10 years old depending on the canyon and the destination. Family routes take children accompanied by an adult; vertical descents are for adults and older teenagers only.

What should I bring?

Swimwear, a towel and a pair of trainers you don't mind getting wet. Wetsuit, neoprene socks, helmet, harness and a dry barrel for your belongings are provided by our teams.

How long does a canyoning trip last?

Allow half a day for a discovery route, approach walk and return included, and a full day for sporty or vertical canyons. Time actually spent in the water is usually about half of the outing.

Can we book canyoning as a group or a company?

Yes, it is one of our most requested formats. Above roughly fifteen people we split the group in rotation across several canyons or several activities. See our group and team building formats.
