Rafting in France — whitewater descents

Rafting in France

Rafting is the ultimate whitewater activity: aboard a sturdy, unsinkable inflatable raft, you descend a river, paddling as a team to tackle the rapids. Led by a guide at the back, your crew coordinates its strokes to weave between waves, holes and rocks. It's a fun, sporty and unifying activity that blends adrenaline in the lively sections with contemplation on the calmer stretches.

Since 1994, Takamaka has run rafting descents on the finest rivers in France, from alpine torrents to mid-mountain rivers. Families, groups of friends, stag/hen parties and companies: everyone can climb aboard, beginner or experienced.

How it works

How a rafting descent unfolds

After welcoming you at the base, we kit you out with a wetsuit, a buoyancy aid and a helmet. The guide then explains the paddle commands (forward, back, stop), the safety positions and what to do if someone falls in. This reassuring warm-up takes a few minutes, then the crew sets off.

Along the way, the guide calls the manoeuvres: speeding up to cross a rapid, parking the raft in an eddy, sometimes a voluntary swim in a calm pool. A descent generally lasts 1.5 to 2 hours on the water. No prior experience is needed — the guide steers, your job is to paddle together and enjoy.

Who it's for

An activity for everyone

Rafting is one of the most accessible whitewater activities: it requires no prior technique, only that you can swim and want to take part. There are family stretches on gentler sections, accessible to children from around 7 to 10 depending on the river, and more sporty descents on lively rapids for thrill seekers.

It's also a sure bet for groups: crew cohesion, laughter and teamwork make rafting a flagship activity for stag and hen parties, outings with friends and corporate seminars.

Safety

Supervision & equipment

Every raft is steered by a state-qualified guide, trained in whitewater rescue and with intimate knowledge of their river. Water levels and flows are continuously monitored, and courses are chosen to suit the day's conditions and the group. Safety is non-negotiable — it's the foundation of every outing.

We provide all the equipment: neoprene wetsuit, buoyancy aid, helmet and paddle. Bring a swimsuit, a towel and a pair of shoes that can go in the water. Early and late in the season the water is cold: the wetsuit keeps you warm throughout.

Where to go

Rafting across France

From the Isère whitewater in the Tarentaise to the Dranse gorges of the Chablais, via Burgundy and the Basque Country, choose the river closest to you.

Season & groups

When to go, and with whom

The rafting season generally runs from April to September. Spring, with the snowmelt, offers the most powerful flows and the sportiest descents; summer brings gentler conditions, ideal for a first experience or a family outing.

For a stag/hen party, group outing or corporate seminar, rafting is a must, often combined with other activities. Build your tailor-made day via our seminar & team building page, or browse all our outdoor activities.
